Our clinicians have SO much helpful information in their brains, that we think it’s only fair that they try and ‘download’ some of that to you lovely parents in order that you can understand,  help and support your kids to the best of your ability. 

Raising an Autistic Child Authentically

8 week course (online) –  Wednesdays 8pm to 9pm

Come on a journey to understanding autism not as a disorder but simply as a different and wonderful way of processing the world.  This course lets you explore neurodiversity as an avenue to learning more about your child’s strengths and difficulties. It also helps connect you with other parents in the area to form a supportive community outside of therapy. This course covers understanding the neurology of autism, sensory processing, understanding and responding to challenging behaviours as well as navigating life as a neurodiverse family. Week 8 will be a meet-up at a local restaurant to support and maintain connection with others on the course.

Raising an ADHD’er

Saturday 10th July 2021, 10am to 4pm

Deep dive into understanding the world of ADHD from our very own ADHD’er and Developmental Psychologist, Sandhya Menon (link to her bio).  Learn deeply about the ADHDing brain and how attention differences impacts different facets of development and life. Walk away  motivated, equipped with strategies to manage their challenges as well as unlock their gifts.

  • Understand ADHD not as a deficit of attention but rather one of variable attention
  • Unlock your ADHDer’s strengths
  • Unpack difficulties beyond the DSM-V criteria accompanied with concrete parenting strategies to manage executive dysfunction, Rejection Sensitive Dysphoria, sensory processing and sleep.
  • Deal with challenging behaviour well
  • Personal experience of an ADHDing adult.

More Than Words - The Hanen Program (Online)

The Hanen More than Words program is designed specifically for parents with young children on the autism spectrum or with social-communication difficulties. Addressing the unique needs of these children, the program provides parents with the tools, strategies and support they need to help their children reach their full communication potential.

In this program you will: 

  • Gain information about how your child learns and communicates so you can set goals to develop these skills
  • Learn what motivates your child to communicate
  • Learn how to turn everyday activities into opportunities for learning to communicate
  • Meet and connect with other parents of young autistic children
  • Learn how to develop your child’s play skills and help them develop friendships
  • Learn how to help your child’s understanding of language (verbal comprehension)

The More Than Words program consists of twelve sessions. These include:

  • 8 x 2 ½ hour group sessions for parents/carers conducted via Zoom which may be offered during the day or in the evenings depending on parent preference. 
  • 4 individual appointments where you get the opportunity to practice the skills you’ve learnt during the course with support from the Hanen Certified Speech Pathologist. 

The More Than Words program is being run online by our Hanen-Certified Speech Pathologist, Aoife Rodgers.

Parent Workshop FAQs

Yes, if you have self-managed or plan-managed NDIS funds in ‘capacity building’, you should be able to use those funds to cover our parent workshops.
