What is the MIGDAS-2?
The Monteiro Interview Guidelines for Diagnosing the Autism Spectrum – Second Edition (MIGDAS-2) is a sensory-based process for gathering and organising the information needed to diagnose autism in children, adolescents, and adults. The process of incorporating the MIGDAS-2 into an autism assessment can be neuro-affirming when it takes into account the person’s unique developmental profile and when the assessment process and feedback are conducted in a validating way to understand the whole person.
Who created the MIGDAS-2?
Dr. Marilyn Monteiro’s work focuses on helping others learn to think and talk about autism as a brain style, and in more positive terms. She teaches others to understand and pay attention to what is relevant in the way each individual’s brain sees the world. This process can help to shape relevant recommendations that take the person’s individual needs into account.
What are the benefits of using the MIGDAS-2 as part of an autism assessment?
The MIGDAS-2 allows for a thorough understanding of a person’s social interactions, communication skills, sensory differences and overall developmental history. This process helps with understanding a person’s strengths and areas which require support.
What does the assessment involve?
A diagnostic assessment for Autism incorporating the MIGDAS-2 involves the following:
- A comprehensive structured parent interview
- Parent, teacher and self-reported questionnaires
- A sensory based assessment session which involves getting to know the young person through activities, games and discussions.
- A feedback session to go through the comprehensive report with recommendations to support the young person.
