How can our Women's Psychologist help you?
Our psychologist, Kim Harrison, has a passion for providing therapy, and psychological consultation to women who are experiencing mental health difficulties. Kim is experienced in treating depression and anxiety, grief and loss, pregnancy and trying to conceive, trauma, chronic health issues, parenting issues, managing complex family dynamics, alcohol use disorder, work challenges, and difficulties in relationships.
Kim provides professional and confidential therapy to address a wide range of issues in a supportive and non-judgemental environment where you feel comfortable talking about these important issues. She uses evidence-based approaches such as Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), and Schema Therapy to help her clients achieve their goals.
There are many reasons why someone might choose to see a psychologist with an in-depth experience and understanding of women’s mental health. These include:
- Understanding Gender-Specific Issues: Our psychologist, Kim, is trained to understand and address issues that specifically affect women, such as reproductive health, hormonal changes, pregnancy, childbirth, menopause, and societal pressures related to gender roles.
- Safe and Supportive Environment: Some women may feel more comfortable discussing sensitive topics with a psychologist who specialises in women’s issues. This can create a safe and supportive environment where they feel understood and validated.
- Expertise in Female Psychology: Kim has a special interest in understanding the unique psychological experiences and challenges that women may face throughout their lives. This can include issues related to self-esteem, body image, relationships, work-life balance, and caregiving responsibilities.
- Trauma and Abuse: Some women may seek out a women’s psychologist if they have experienced trauma or abuse, including domestic violence, sexual assault, or childhood abuse. Kim can provide support and therapy tailored to the unique needs of survivors.
- Pregnancy and Postpartum Support: Pregnancy and childbirth can bring about significant emotional and psychological changes. Kim can offer support and therapy for issues such as prenatal anxiety, postpartum depression, and adjustment to motherhood.
- Reproductive Health Concerns: Kim can provide support for women dealing with reproductive health concerns such as infertility, pregnancy loss, or complications related to menstruation or menopause.
- Empowerment and Self-Development: Kim’s focus is on empowering women to achieve their full potential and develop healthy coping mechanisms for life’s challenges. She can offer guidance on assertiveness, self-care, and boundary-setting.
Women's Psychology FAQs
Our psychologist can offer either telehealth or in-person appointments. For in-person sessions we are at Sum of Us Kids on a Friday. Telehealth appointments are available on a Wednesday – you will receive a link via email that you will need to click at the appointment time. Please do relevant system checks prior to the session (i.e. sound and audio). You might meet Kim’s pet, Eevee the cat, during telehealth appointments 😊
To claim a Medicare rebate for sessions you will need a valid referral from a GP. You should request a longer appointment time with the GP for a Mental Health Care Plan. This is usually an initial 6 sessions, with the option to request 4 more within a calendar year, for a maximum of ten. You will get back the Medicare portion when you claim this with your receipt.
